A sold-out show on their Californication tour. Their triumphant comeback album, at least for me. Sure, it was more accessible and didn't have the danger and funkiness of BSSM, but it still had quality songs. And, there would have been no better way to start the concert than with the fiesty firestarter, "Around The World." The other song I think of as a possible best start to an album ever is Rage Against The Machine's "Tesify." Both songs were produced by Rick Rubin in 1999. He had the knack that year.
The show went off exactly as I expected. Flea convulsed, Anthony Kiedis did his flowy-flowy hip-hop arm motions, and John Frusciante did his subtle, laid-back, compact routine. Chad Smith was solid as always. Frusciante was the MVP of the show. His solo song, "Your Pussy's Glued to a Building on Fire," sounded exactly like the title suggests--explosive. A great show-off moment. A sexy guitar freak-out. Frusciante also provided worth with his enjoyable background falsetto.
Flea's solo song, "Pea," was a nice surprise. Out of the seventeen songs played, only four pre-dated BSSM, which was no surprise. "Me and My Friends" was just as mindlessly fun as on record. The band executed the songs well, but I didn't get what I paid for. I really paid for a spot on the floor during their BSSM tour, but the reality left me on the balcony for The Californication tour. I would love to have gotten sweaty in a club listening to that band in the old days.
The Chili Peppers already have a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but with their recent aim at hits, I have a feeling the band doesn't think so. Let's just hope they don't outstay their welcome. Actually, it IS time for them to call it quits. It was a good run, but they're running out of gas.
Anyway, good show. Not great.
