Live New Orleans

2 Skinnee J's

House of Blues

November 30, 1995

The Phunk Junkeez were relatively popular at this time. I went with my friend Dane to their headlining show at The House of Blues, and we just happened to catch opening band 2 Skinnee J's. They blew our minds. The Phunk Junkeez were no match for the J's. The J's great costumes, silly antics, funny lyrics, and super poppy but rocking rap was such a highlight, I went to see them again at The Varsity in Baton Rouge. I dragged my friends Carl and Sean there with the promise of a good show, with me not even sure if I was correctly remembering how good they were in the first place. They were even better this time, and my friends became hooked. I've seen them countless times, and they are one of my top five favorite live rock bands. Some of the best rhymes and a true tragedy that they never got big. Maybe people weren't ready for them. I should not forget A.J. "Stumpy" Johnson, their manager, who did an ass dance every show. The band unfortunately broke up recently, but hopefully Stumpy's gold lame hat will resurface at a reunion gig in the near future.
