Dinosaur Jr. anti-review

April 01, 2006

This evening and night had so much potential, but I lost the beat of it. I lost the pulse and decided to give up before midnight. I'm afraid to check my messages. I know there's one from Antigravity editor Leo McGovern, and since I left my phone at home while at my friends house watching LSU lose, I'm scared he called to say he managed to secure an extra FREE Dinosaur Jr. ticket for me.

And I'm pretty sure that my other friends are at Ol Toones right now, basking in the afterglow of Dinosaur Jr. Or, maybe the LSU loss brought them down a few notches, too. Truth is, I'm not a big fan of Dinosaur Jr., but it's not too often that so many of my friends get tickets for the same show, so maybe I felt a little pressure to go. I've purchased a few Dino albums, and I like their music, but I had the strange feeling that the concert was gonna be some strange gaggle of super-indie people. Like that funny Onion story where thirty record store clerks are killed at a Yo La Tengo show. Not murdered. Smothered, or burnt to death. Something like that. Even though I knew it was gonna be a good rock show, and I can't really pass those up, I also didn't want to have to maneuver through the scene of people who were only at the concert be cause they felt they SHOULD be. And I tried to tell myself that the tickets were expensive($22), even though I've payed more money for crazier stuff.

I'm not sure if it was the depression of the loss talking, but SNL and MadTV were pretty humorless tonight. The only thing that was funny was the live band singing a morning talk show theme. They carried it on way too long, and it eventually devolved into a revolutionary rant against the government treatment of American Indians. It doesn't sound funny on paper, but whatever.

So, I'm drinking my Arizona iced tea, trying to hydrate myself after doing some drinking that I didn't really need to. I think that's what you're supposed to do at a basketball game. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but it just made me tired.

The New Pornographers never let me down.
