The Dead Future of Funk

January 18, 2005

A great band name and a great band, too. The local Soul/Funk band with a foot in Jazz played tight, intelligent party music at Shiloh Tuesday night. Like a well-woven sweater. There were no holes, and the musicians' different lines flowed in and out of each other seamlessly. The instrumental band consisted of guitar, bass, drums, electric piano, and saxophone. The keys were always distorted in a Bernie Worrell fashion, and the sax was normally out front to provide the main melody. Though the songs were long, there was nothing superfluous about the band. The pieces of their songs flowed expectantly into one another. There were solos, but no tangents. It was fun, hook-heavy groove music.
