David Byrne

ACL Festival

BY JASON SONGE

I hadn't heard David Byrne's new album w/ Brian Eno before I saw this show, but I didn't need to. The new songs, which constituted a majority of the setlist, were so infectious and dance-ready that I felt like they were favorites and that I had known them a while only halfway through.

Byrne came with a full band, all dressed in white, as he was. Silver sunglasses and hair filled out his look. Three dancers displayed choreographed moves for every song, but these weren't your normal dance routines. Jiving w/ Byrne's disconnected and electronic emotions, the dancers acted like robots and jerked discordantly. They were also graceful, pulling off ballet moves for certain stretches.

I was grateful for the three Talking Heads songs he threw in: "Crosseyed and Painless," "Once In A Lifetime," and "Life During Wartime."

He's still got it.
